Recently (Sat 4th Oct 2025), Shugorei held our very first concert that we organised entirely by ourselves — from booking the venue to managing every detail.
The last time I personally organised a concert was my debut solo recital in 2006, followed by an improvised performance for electronics, piano, and percussion in 2007, and a clarinet and marimba duo concert in 2010.
Apart from those, I’ve mostly been invited to perform — either joining festivals, ensembles, or other bands that were organised by someone else.
So, this Shugorei concert marks only the fourth time in my life that I (or we) have produced our own event.
My 2006 debut recital was supported by the venue and didn’t require any costs, but every other self-organised concert since then has been something I invested in myself — often knowing that it might not be profitable.
My musical life spans orchestral, ensemble, and solo work.
With orchestras, there’s always a big organisational structure and many people working behind the scenes to make things happen.
But in small ensembles, everything — promotion, transport, logistics — has to be handled by the performers themselves.
This time, my Shugorei partner Tom and I prepared everything together.
I left the paperwork (which I’m not great at!) to him, while I focused on things like merchandise design and ticketing.
By sharing the work between us, we somehow made it through and successfully held our album-release concert on Saturday, October 4.
The album came out on September 25, followed closely by the concert on October 4, so both musically and administratively it was an intense and busy time.
I wanted to write about it here — partly to share a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes challenges that musicians don’t often talk about.
I searched for possible venues around Brisbane, contacted several, compared budgets, and finally decided on Metro Arts.
The team there was wonderful — supportive during preparation and on the concert day itself. It was truly a great place to perform.
For the first time as Shugorei, we also made our own merchandise.
Since these items were for the people who support us, we wanted them to be good-quality and affordable, so we kept the prices close to cost.
It was our way of sharing a bit of Shugorei love with everyone.
Musically, we did more preparation than ever before — especially for our on-stage talk segments.
Even though I might have said a few random things during the concert (as I tend to do!), I think everything came together beautifully in the end.
Life is short, and moments like these — one-time events shared with others — are so precious.
I’m deeply grateful to everyone who shared that moment with us, and I want to keep creating music with that same sense of gratitude.

守護霊 初の自主企画コンサートをおえて
この度、守護霊として初めて自分たちで会場を手配し、オーガナイズした演奏会を開催しました。
自分で会場を取り、コンサートを企画したのは、2006年のデビューソロコンサート、2007年のエレクトロニクス・ピアノ・打楽器トリオによる即興公演、そして2010年のクラリネットとマリンバのデュオコンサート以来のこと。
それ以外は、誰かがオーガナイズしたコンサートに出演したり、フェスティバルからお声かけをいただいて出演したり、他のバンドのメンバーとして演奏したりと、基本的には招かれる形での活動が中心でした。
そう考えると、今回の守護霊コンサートは、私にとって４回目の「自分（たち）で企画・運営した公演」ということになります。
2006年のデビューコンサートは会場の全面的なサポートがあり無料開催でしたが、それ以外の自主公演はすべて会場費などを支払い、赤字覚悟で行ってきました。
私の音楽活動の範囲は、オーケストラ、アンサンブル、ソロなどさまざまですが、オーケストラのように大きな組織が動く現場では、裏方で支えてくださる多くの方々がいます。
一方で、アンサンブルは少人数なので、宣伝や運搬など、何から何まで自分たちでやらなければなりません。
今回は守護霊のパートナーであるトムと二人で全ての準備を進めました。私は書類関係が苦手なのでその部分をトムにお願いし、自分はマーチャンダイズ制作やチケット手配など、自分にできることを担当。お互いにできることを持ち寄って、なんとか無事に10月4日のアルバム発表記念コンサートを終えることができました。
アルバムのリリースが9月25日、コンサートが10月4日という流れで、音楽的にも運営的にも本当に慌ただしい日々でした。
こうしてブログに書くのは、普段あまり語られることのない、音楽家の「舞台裏の苦労」を少しでも記しておきたいと思ったからです。
会場探しも、自分でブリスベン市内のいくつかの会場を調べ、問い合わせや見積もりを重ねた結果、メトロアーツに決めました。
準備期間中も当日もスタッフの方々がとても親切で、本当に素晴らしい会場でした。
また、今回初めて「守護霊」として自分たちのマーチャンダイズを制作しました。
応援してくださる方々に喜んでいただけるように、良いものを作りたいという思いで、できるだけ原価に近い価格で提供しました。
私たちの“守護霊ラブ”をシェアする気持ちで制作したものです。
音楽面では、これまで以上にトークの打ち合わせを重ねました。
本番では少しランダムな話し方をしてしまったかもしれませんが（笑）、結果的にとても良い雰囲気のコンサートになったと思います。
人生は短い。
だからこそ、この一度きりの時間を共に過ごしてくださった皆さまに心から感謝し、これからも音楽活動を続けていきたいと思います。
最後に、アルバム制作に関わってくださった素晴らしい音楽家のコラボレーターの皆さん、シェムのこころ溶けそうになるマジカルボイス、
