Wayne is a legendary piano craftsman. He is currently working at the school where I work, maintaining all the pianos there. It’s really nice to see such a legendary figure working at the school, and he’s also a lot of fun to chat with.

My memory goes back to around 2004 or 2005, when I joined the Bangalow Music Festival to play Messiaen’s Exotic Birds. I vividly remember how amazing the Stuart piano looked and sounded – so massive and beautiful! I had never seen or heard a piano like that in my life. As a pianist myself, I was incredibly impressed by it. Every now and then, I would dream about that piano.

The school I work has the big Stuart piano in their massive auditorium. It’s just as massive as I remember! And now, the real craftsman behind it is here on site. How lucky am I to be able to talk to him about my feelings for his piano! Wayne spent a year in Japan for piano craftsmen training at YAMAHA, so he knows some Japanese. It is nice to have conversations with him in Japanese too!
