I’ve known drummer John Parker for a long time. I’ve always admired his band back then, ‘Misinterprotato’. They’ve been my idols, and I’ve always loved attending their live performances. I used to dream about playing with them someday, as a big and unreal dream. It came true when John asked me to play the string parts of his piece ‘Life Gets in the Way’ on all percussion instruments in 2020. You can check out the performance here: https://youtu.be/IclECHNzNtg. Our project, Trichotomy, and the Nozomi Omote project, took off from there. Trichotomy received funding to commission pieces from local composers like Cathy Likhuta and Thomas Green, as well as from the band members themselves – John Parker, Sean Foran, and Sam Vincent. I played all the percussion parts for these pieces, and we released video clips on YouTube.
As for our performances, we played at the Stradbroke Chamber Music Festival in July 2022 and at Livespark at Powerhouse in December 2022. During these performances, we used recorded sound along with click tracks in our headphones.
Recently, on August 17, 2023, we finally performed with all live sounds, thanks to the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. For this concert, I invited my students – Dara Williams, Quinn Ramsey, and Matthew Conway – from the QLD Con to play with me, and they did an amazing job.
I’m looking forward to collaborating more with Trichotomy in the future.
