Joyce To started taking private lessons with me when she was a student at Kenmore State High School with the goal of getting into the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. As a percussionist, we have to play a wide variety of instruments including the snare drum, xylophone, triangle, cymbals, castanets, tambourine, glockenspiel, marimba, bass drum, tam-tam, and many more. Joyce excelled in mallet percussion playing, but she needed to improve her snare drum fundamental techniques. We focused on developing her stick control skills while continuing to strengthen her mallet playing. She successfully gained admission to the Queensland Conservatorium and later pursued her master’s degree at the University of Toronto in Canada. Following her studies, she began working in Canada’s art industry. Currently, Joyce is back in Brisbane on holiday, reconnecting with family and friends after nearly five years. It’s wonderful to have a lifelong friend and colleague from my educational journey. It’s great to see her growing and internationally acknowledged now. I’m very proud of Joyce!!
