Balancing Performance and Education: My Current Journey

As an enthusiastic educator and an active professional performer, I am currently immersed in the world of music performance. Presently, I have the privilege of playing the timpani for the Queensland Ballet’s Trilogy as a member of Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra. This exhilarating experience requires me to multitask and navigate various musical elements, with tuning being of utmost importance. In the ballet pieces, I am constantly counting bars and adjusting the tunings, occasionally diverting my gaze from the conductor to ensure I stay in sync with the music. While it becomes easier with practice, the limited rehearsal time for these massive pieces underscores the significance of having clear musical cues and markings.

Timpani and Mentorship:

Since I don’t personally own timpani, I rely on hiring gear for performances. Fortunately, Tom O’Kelly, the owner of Just Percussion, serves as my mentor and a respected percussionist and timpanist. Tom provides valuable guidance in selecting the appropriate timpani models for me. I have a particular fondness for Premier timpani from the UK. They produce a clear and round sound, which I find incredibly beautiful. Each timpani brand has its unique pedal system, but thanks to my time studying Education in Kanazawa, Japan, I became well-acquainted with Premier’s systems. It’s fortunate that Tom also shares an appreciation for Premier timpani and has a set available.

The QLD Ballet Trilogy:

The Queensland Ballet’s Trilogy, in which I am currently involved, will culminate on Sunday, June 25th. I highly recommend watching this remarkable performance. For more information and tickets, please visit the following link: https://www.queenslandballet.com.au/performances/2023/trilogy

Balancing my role as an educator with my passion for performance has been an incredible journey. The opportunity to play the timpani in the Queensland Ballet’s Trilogy has been both challenging and rewarding. Through the support of mentors like Tom and the availability of premier timpani, I have been able to embrace this experience wholeheartedly. I invite you to witness the magic of the Queensland Ballet’s Trilogy and share in the joy of music and performance.

Best regards,
